The long, narrow sleeves and full, gently gathered skirt form the simple silhouette of this organic, hand-woven Kala cotton dress. It can be worn with salwar or KADA-ber trousers.
The fabric carries subtle green-grey hues, created by naturally dyeing the cotton in a vat of acacia bark and pomegranate.
The seam embroidery is known as Machi-Kadho and Khilvani. Each dress is completely hand-stitched by the tailor and elder women of the Rabari tribe.
Every garment varies slightly, as each one is hand-cut, stitched, and dyed. Variations in shade and small imperfections are part of its intrinsic beauty — each piece a collective expression of the many hands it has passed through.
Made with Kala cotton, indigenous to the Kutch and Indus Valley lands for over 7,000 years and also known as black cotton. Thriving with as little as 10 cm of annual rainfall, it is naturally low-water and grown without chemicals. This uncertified indigenous cotton allows seeds to be saved and replanted year after year, unlike the GMO crops that now dominate much of India.
